Beyond Site Search - Part Two - Using site search data for in-store kiosks, targeted emails and more

In our last issue, we talked about how site search can help you create more targeted paid search
campaigns, be more effective at SEO, and even improve the impact of your customer service teams.

There are many more ways site search can be useful in improving the customer experience and helping build one-to-one
relationships, including in-store kiosks, targeted email campaigns and specialized navigation links, which we’ll explore
here.
Let’s first look at in-store kiosks, which are typically an extension of a company’s ecommerce site and give customers
a way to browse products and find out about sales and promotions online when they’re actually in a physical store. How can
site search be useful here? Similar to the way it works on your ecommerce site, a good search solution will direct
customers to the products they seek in as few clicks as possible. It can go even further by enabling you to promote
various items or brands when people type in specific keywords – all based on the data from search activity on your site.
Similarly, site search data can be leveraged for creating targeted, one-to-one email campaigns that drive more sales.
We touched on this a few issues back when we talked about our work with partner ExactTarget, a provider of on-demand
software for email communications. By utilizing site search data when creating an email marketing campaign, you can
send relevant, one-to-one email messages to customers. By leveraging information on your customers’ site search behavior,
along with merchandizing rules and personal preference information, you can create emails with personal product recommendations
to send to your email list.
Finally, the site search data is useful in improving the navigation of your site and gives you additional commerce
opportunities for visitors who choose not to use the search box. For example, think of the different paths visitors might use to
navigate your site – product type, brand name, price range, etc. When customers click on those navigation
links they’re instantly taken to a search results landing page, which shows the most popular items based on
previous visitors behaviour.
Many of our customers tell us that people who use the search function tend to spend more per visit
than those who don’t, so by creating navigation pages that match search results pages you increase the likelihood that
the customer may spend more money during their visit to your site.
Have you found other ways to make use of your site search and the data it provides? If so, we’d love to hear about it.
